Speaking the Same Language

Statistics show that people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities are more at risk on our roads.

People may come from a country with vastly different road rules or a different traffic flow and find it difficult to get used to the Australian road environment.

‘My Community’ is a new NRMA project that looks at the road safety resources that exist for these groups, and sees how they can be made more relevant, meaningful and available.

NRMA Policy Advisor, Anne Morphett, has been conducting focus groups to ascertain the level of understanding of road safety among these community members, and identify the channels that would be most appropriate for reaching them, such as brochures, community radio stations or community newspapers.

New resources based on the feedback from the focus groups are now being developed. According to Anne, it’s a very practical project that will help a large sector of road users to be safer on our roads.
