Roads Health Report

Over the last three months NRMA has intensified its campaign to see significant funding injections in our major highways.

This holiday period is providing further proof as to why major arteries like the Pacific and Princes highways need to be upgraded immediately.

Sections of these highways, that are still single lane and undivided, have struggled to cope with the increased traffic volumes over the holiday period. They are also very dangerous.

Members have made the most out of NRMA’s fixourbloodyroads.com campaign to voice their frustration at the length of time it is taking governments to get serious about upgrading the roads.

More than 1000 electronic cards have been sent to politicians via our website www.fixourbloodyroads.com, demanding action on the Pacific, Princes and Hume highways.

The campaign is ongoing and Members can still send their local State and Federal members an e-card urging action.

NRMA’s 10 ‘Better Roads’ panels are also hard at it to keep road funding in the community.

NRMA Motoring & Services commissioned 10 separate research reports, one for each panel, which investigated the number one road related issue in their area.

The end result was 10 individual lobby groups, each reflecting their local community, armed with new and alarming research that gave undeniable strength to their efforts in getting their local roads upgraded.

NRMA’s research found that most roads servicing the wineries in the Hunter regions – one of the State’s most popular tourist destinations – were not up to scratch.

A separate report found a $477 million blow-out in upgrading the Pacific Highway, brought about because of massive project delays.

These campaigns and the work NRMA will undertake throughout 2006 are designed to show the community that substandard roads and the pain and suffering that is usually accompanied with them should not be accepted as the norm.

This will ensure the quality of our roads will be front and centre in the public’s mind – where it belongs.
