President's column

Being a Member of NRMA Motoring & Services means you get benefits that go beyond just roadside assistance and towing in theAlan Evans event that your car breaks down.

Three years ago the board and management knew that our priority had to be to save the company from financial ruin before we could look to improving Member benefits.

Having placed NRMA Motoring & Services on a firm financial footing, we are now in a strong position to continue offering extra benefits for your membership – benefits that include, but aren’t restricted to, Show Your Card & Save, NRMA batteries, NRMA travel, special publications and youth products. The board is now carefully considering further opportunities, with the aim of providing extra benefits for your annual fee.

We are also working with NRMA Insurance, with the aim of securing enhanced benefits for NRMA Motoring & Services’ Members who are also customers of NRMA Insurance.

More than 60% of our Members have at least one insurance policy with NRMA Insurance, yet they currently get no benefits for being loyal to both brands.

Since demutualisation our two companies have maintained a business relationship, and it makes good sense that our Members who have stayed loyal to both organisations be rewarded.

But we also fight on those issues close to your heart and hip pocket, such as petrol. In the lead up to Easter, petrol prices across NSW and the ACT skyrocketed. Motorists were furious, and for good reason.

Oil companies seem to conveniently increase their prices just in time for the holidays, when families are about to travel long distances and petrol is in higher demand than normal.

At the time that petrol prices started to rise, NRMA came out strongly in the media calling for the Federal Government to return the powers the ACCC need to monitor the behaviour of the oil companies.

Currently, the ACCC can do little about these sharp prices in petrol – they have been left as toothless tigers.

Families cannot afford to be spending $100 on a full tank of petrol just so oil companies can get rich at our expense. Petrol today is an essential product for most of us.

NRMA has led the charge against this issue. In September last year, we held the Petrol Summit; we launched the Petrol Watch and Country Petrol Watch websites; and we have become the number one independent voice on this issue.

We will not give up the fight until motorists get a fairer deal and we are satisfied that our Members are not getting ripped off.
