Driving me crazy

Driving me crazy We receive many letters from Members telling us about bad driving behaviour they’ve witnessed. So we’ve compiled a top five list of what peeves you off on the road.

#1 Mobile phones

“Not a day goes by when I don’t notice somebody on the phone while driving. Are people in that much of a rush that they can’t pull over and stop for two minutes to take a call?”

“When I see someone texting while driving, I think of that driver who ran into and killed a cyclist while sending an SMS. All it took was for her to take her eyes off the road for a second.”

“I recently saw a young boy, about 10 years of age, riding his bicycle in traffic, using his left hand to control the bike, and his mobile phone in the right hand. The only thing he was doing right was wearing a helmet.”

#2 Overtaking in the left lane or driving slowly in the right lane

“Crawling along in the right lane! This usually goes hand in hand with passing on the left, although some nutters weave in and out of traffic no matter how fast people are driving in the other lanes. It’s so dangerous. You need your wits about you out there.”

“I travel from Gosford to Sydney daily. There’s a mix of confusion and arrogance as cars force their way into inside lanes to gain a few car lengths.”

“I have noticed an increase in the number of drivers who pull over into your lane (and cut you off) while you’re following a vehicle at a safe distance. They perform this action as though nothing has happened!”

#3 Not using indicators

“My pet driving hate is people who don’t indicate when they are supposed to. I think people assume that everyone knows what they are going to do. Newsflash: we don’t drive around with crystal balls in our laps!”

“To whom it may concern, and there are many of you. On the right-hand side on your steering column is a lever. If you push it up; a little light on the left of your car starts blinking, push it down and the same happens on the right. Those lights are called INDICATORS, and they let other drivers know where you’re going. Try it some time, it really works.”

“I hereby announce the death in Sydney of the ‘pulling out’ indicating signal. I still use it but then I am just an old eccentric.”

#4 Fog, Xenon and high-beam lights

“I have noticed more cars with more and brighter lights. In many cases with additional lights so strong that they are brighter than the headlights. I’m sure that some of these lights don’t meet registration requirements.”

“Drivers with their fog lights on when there is no fog are idiots.”

“Why does everyone seem to drive at night with their high beams on? The bright lights dazzle drivers and are the cause of more car accidents than we care to give credit for.”

“Glare from fog lights used when it’s not foggy add to the hazards of driving in the wet at night. Not only is it illegal, it won’t actually help your night vision. All it does is double the glare for oncoming motorists.”

#5 Tailgating

“Argh. What’s wrong with people? Look, I understand busy traffic is frustrating but drivers who insist on tailgating are causing collisions, accidents and more stressful roads. What makes them think their time is more important than the rest of us?”

“Do you weave in and out of traffic, cutting other cars off? Do you feel compelled to see just how close you can get your grille to the bumper in front? Perhaps you like to speed along flashing your headlights, making obscene gestures? Listen mate, you aren’t just an annoying driver. You are a dangerous one. People like you cause serious injuries every day on our roads. Smarten up because the life you save might not just be your own.”

“P plate drivers are in a ‘Don’t do as I do, do as I say’ situation. For years they have sat behind Mum or Dad, tailgating or speeding. Why doesn’t everybody just slow down?”

Dishonourable Mentions
Loud thumping stereos in cars
“Turn down the volume! It’s not big or clever but it does get on my nerves.”

Noisy vehicles with modified exhausts
“Inconsiderate drivers roaring around in high performance cars. I’m over it!”

Incorrect use of roundabouts
“Why speed through a roundabout without checking the way is clear? You have a brake you know.”

Blocking or holding up traffic because they got in the wrong lane
“If you get in the wrong lane and find yourself at a red light, is it fair to hold up 20 cars behind you as you force your way into the correct one?”

Don’t know how to merge/drivers who speed up and won’t let you in
“It works like a zip guys, it’s not hard.”

Parked cars that protrude or sit across bays
“As if it’s not hard enough to find a park, when you do find one some cretin has taken up half the spot.”
